RJB Remodel
Denver, CO | 2020-2021
In this endeavor, bestowed with the delicate task of enhancing the exterior appearance of a home originally constructed in 1959, located in Denver's Polo Club neighborhood. We were asked to maintain the original ranch-style architectural essence, preserving its inherent charm while giving the house a fresh and contemporary aesthetic by gently embracing novel facade interventions and imbuing it with an alluring and secluded front patio.
Foremost in the pursuit of updating the exterior siding, was to reinvigorate the visage through a harmonious union of modernity and familiarity, borne of material composition. Adhering to a respectful deference, we retained the existing brick as the foundational and grounding element, around which the design narrative organically unfolds. Consequently, the undulating horizontal wood siding was removed and replaced by a vertical board & batten wood siding, a tactile component to balance the brick's substantive presence. Guided by a palette of refined hues, a new application of soft white paint adornes the brick and wood siding, endowing the exterior walls with a resplendent luminance, while the introduction of new black roofing, garage doors and dark fascia & trim elements, bestowes a crisply contrasting accent to the primary white volumes.
For the front patio, we devised a plan starting from the sidewalk approach experience. A new walkway path was introduced, enhanced with concealed lighting, guiding guests towards the house through a series of landings and thresholds which would give a measured experience of the front yard. The inclusion of deep concrete treads and spacious landings encouraged a leisurely stroll, giving guests the opportunity to appreciate the homeowner's gardens before reaching the private patio. To define this space, a low, solid brick wall was crafted, while a custom arrangement of gradated horizontal slats made from black steel served as a semi-transparent screen, providing both inward privacy and outward views. These design elements not only matched the existing brick siding on the house but also harmonized with the black roof, fascia, and trim, resulting in a cohesive and balanced composition between the old and new elements.
